What caused Flight 815 to break up & crash?

Within “The Swan” Complex (aka “The Hatch”) there is an electromagnetic force with a charge that continually builds. The ‘108 Machine’ is used to release that charge just before it reaches critical and causes a cascade magnetic effect — attracting all magnetically-reactive material towards it (with, seemingly, ever-increasing strength)
When Desmond was inhabiting the hatch, he let the ‘108 Machine’ run out & the electromagnetic build-up apparently grew strong enough to pull the plane apart as it flew over the island.
There could still be a question as to how so many passengers survived what should have been an wholly fatal crash?
